With the New Year knocking at the door and bringing along exciting releases to look forward to, we thought of taking a look back at how 2016 fared in the entertainment sector. Overall, 2016 was tagged as “The Year Of Biopics” in Bollywood with movies that offered hard-hitting narratives, gripping performances and path-breaking dramas. On the other hand, the year saw some awe-inspiring realities, relationship-centric movies and top notch action-adventure flicks. Airlift

Trust Akshay Kumar to deliver performance with utmost perfection. Add to it grace and dollops of talent in the form of Nimrat Kaur and voila! We get Raja Krishna Menon’s directorial wonder Airlift. The movie narrates the story of evacuation of Indians from Kuwait during Saddam Hussein’s terror strike.

The infamous incident of Pam Am flight 73 hijacked by terrorists in 1986 was beautifully chronicled by Ram Madhvani in this movie. Actor Sonam Kapoor’s career took off very well post this movie and was critically acclaimed for her performance. Kapoor  played the role of Neerja Bhanot, a 22 year old air hostess who sacrificed her life and saved 359 passengers on board.

The Jungle Book

The magical story of a man-cub who had been brought up by a tiger managed to garner the attention of children and adults alike. The movie received an overwhelming response and did an overall business of ₹183.95 Cr in India!

The most well written film of 2016, this Dharma Productions movie was well liked by the audience. Being a family drama, it carefully nuanced the problems and details of relationships. The movie starred Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan.

Udta Punjab

One of the most talked about films of 2016, Udta Punjab highlighted the issue of rampant substance abuse and trafficking in the state. The movie’s cast along with their stellar performances helped in making it a blockbuster.

The hard-hitting movie was both critically acclaimed and well received by audiences. Reflecting the reality of the country, the movie spoke about a few tabooed ideas prevailing in our society.

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story

There is no match like Cricket and Bollywood in India. The movie essayed the life and struggles of Captain Cool, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. It beautifully portrays the efforts of the iconic sportsperson and what went into the making of a living legend. Critics praised the acting skills of Sushant Singh Rajput.

Benedict Cumberbatch plays intriguing enough as the Marvel superhero in this brain-melting tale that reinvigorates the genre. The usual action sequences and explosions became the icing on the cake with visually appealing VFX.

Little did one expect that Gauri Shinde’s simple story of a young girl dealing with situations of everyday life would turn out to be a game changer. A dash of life mantras from shrink Shah Rukh Khan entertained audiences through the beginning of December.

The Dhaakad Chhoriyaan along with Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan made a sure enough formula to create a powerful Dangal at the box office. This cinematic masterpiece highlighted the achievements of the Phogat sisters and the endless efforts of their father along with the supportive mother. Dangal ended the year for B Town on an incredible note.
